Thermo‐Responsive Microemulsions Containing Deep Eutectic‐Based Antibiotic Formulations for Improved Treatment of Resistant Bacterial Ocular Infections

چکیده

The rise of antibiotic resistant strains, as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), challenges the current treatment infections. In case ocular infections, eye drops are commonly prescribed. However, their efficacy is usually compromised by low viscosity these formulations and drainage. To overcome drawbacks, deep eutectic solvent (DES)-based microemulsions with thermo-responsive character, that increase upon contact have been developed. Using betaine-based DES aqueous solutions, it possible to up 140-fold water solubility chloramphenicol, typically used in solutions containing applied phases water-in-oil-in-water (w/o/w) microemulsions, being stable 3 months. Furthermore, a sustained-release higher permeation through cornea than commercialized achieved, while presenting comparable cytotoxicity profiles (cell viabilities > 88%). Higher antimicrobial activity faster action infection MRSA observed compared (7 log10 inactivation 48 h vs 72 h). Overall, comprising promising strategy achieve effectiveness bacterial

A rifampicin-containing antibiotic treatment improves outcome of staphylococcal deep sternal wound infections.

BACKGROUND Deep sternal wound infection (DSWI) is a severe complication after cardiac surgery, mostly caused by staphylococci. Little is known about the optimal antibiotic management. METHODS A 10 year retrospective analysis of 100 patients with staphylococcal DSWI after cardiac surgery in a tertiary hospital. Treatment failure was defined as sternal wound dehiscence or fistula at the end of ...

Antibiotic-resistant gram-negative bacterial infections in patients with cancer.

Patients with cancer are at high risk for infections caused by antibiotic resistant gram-negative bacteria. In this review, we summarize trends among the major pathogens and clinical syndromes associated with antibiotic resistant gram-negative bacterial infection in patients with malignancy, with special attention to carbapenem and expanded-spectrum β-lactam resistance in Escherichia coli, Kleb...

Using anti-biofilm peptides to treat antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections.

Host defense (antimicrobial) peptides (HDPs) are produced by virtually all organisms and have an important role in protection against microbial infections. Some naturally occurring peptides such as the human cathelicidin LL-37 and the bovine peptide indolicidin have been shown to inhibit bacterial biofilm development. Rearrangement and substantial modification of the amino acid sequence of thes...

Combination antibiotic treatment of serious methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infections.

Outcomes from methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections are relatively poor, at least in part due to the limitations of vancomycin (the current standard treatment for MRSA). Combination antibiotic treatment for MRSA infections is an attractive alternative as it could address most of vancomycin's shortcomings, including poor tissue penetration, slow bacterial killing, and eme...
